The New York Giants’ season has gone from bad to worse with coach Brian Daboll confirming Monday that quarterback Daniel Jones tore his ACL during Sunday’s 30-6 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders and will miss the rest of the season. Here’s what you need to know:
- Jones was slow to get up after being sacked by the Raiders’ Maxx Crosby in the second quarter. He remained in the game but went down untouched on the next play and limped to the sideline. Jones did not return in the second half.
- Sunday marked Jones’ first game back since suffering a neck injury in New York’s Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins.
- The Giants are also without backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who sustained a rib injury in the team’s Week 8 loss to the New York Jets and was placed on IR.
- When asked if Taylor’s injury is also season ending, Daboll could not provide an answer Monday.
New York’s options at QB
With Taylor on injured reserve and unable to return until at least after the bye week, the Giants signed quarterback Matt Barkley to the practice squad last week. But he was not elevated to the active roster for Sunday’s game. That left Tommy DeVito as the solo backup option. He threw two interceptions and the offense couldn’t get anything going once Jones exited. On the immediate future of the position group, Daboll said he’ll sit down with general manager Joe Schoen and discuss what’s next.

There’s a lot to process for this offense and things will have to change now that Jones is out long term. Depending on how things shake out, the Giants could be in a position to consider their future quarterback situation with a high 2024 draft pick, which makes things even more complicated.
Asked about the future of the Giants quarterback position, Daboll said he is focused on getting DeVito and Barkley ready. When following up about Jones’ lengthy injury history, Daboll said: “My focus is on just being there for the young man and I know he’ll do everything he can do to get back, get ready to play.” — Charlotte Carroll, Giants staff writer

How the Giants' unexpected success last season is coming back to haunt them
‘It just buckled’
FOX’s sideline reporter Laura Okmin reported Jones told Saquon Barkley when he asked what happened, “I don’t know, it just buckled.”
The Giants were just getting used to having their starter back, along with healthy offensive linemen Andrew Thomas and Evan Neal, when he went down. Given the 2-6 start and Jones’ three-game absence, Sunday’s game was going to be a big test for the quarterback on how he could help right the ship. — Carroll
